Book Summary by Heated Rivalry Wiki

Heated Rivalry begins where the rivalry itself does - two teenagers meeting outside a rink at the World Junior Championships. Shane Hollander, polite and earnest. Ilya Rozanov, immediately vowing to destroy him. Russia wins gold that year, Canada wins the next, and by the time the NHL Draft rolls around, it's official: Ilya goes first overall to Boston Bears, Shane goes second to Montreal Voyageurs, and the most intense rivalry in hockey is locked in. What nobody knows is that an encounter in the hotel gym and a joint commercial shoot later (and of course, that locker room shower), the two of them have quietly started something they have absolutely no name for and gradually been falling for each other.

For years, it stays exactly that: nameless, secret, and compartmentalised. Shane buys an entire investment condo just so they have somewhere to meet that isn't either of their actual homes. They text only to arrange hookups. They play hard against each other on the ice, and secretly hook up after the games. But their routine changes drastically when Ilya invites Shane over to his penthouse apartment to make him tuna melt. Shane freaked out as that day feels too real for him, so he freaks out and leaves. Ilya then watches Shane starts dating actress Rose Landry and feeling strong jealousy and annoyance. In a Montreal club, they bump into each other unexpectedly. Because of his jealousy, Ilya kisses a woman in front of Shane, while Shane just stands in the middle of the dance floor and stares at Ilya. Both of them know neither of them is happy and something needs to change.

Everything shifts at the Tampa Bay All-Star Game, where for the first time they play on the same team. Ilya splashes Shane by the pool, they're electric on the ice together, and that night in Ilya's hotel room, they finally have the conversation they've been avoiding for years. Shane comes out to Ilya. Ilya opens up about his father's Alzheimer's, about Russia, about why they can never be more than this. It's tender and heartbreaking and although nothing is resolved, something has shifted in their relationship. Then Ilya's father passes away, and Shane calls him in Moscow, and Ilya walks through a freezing park pouring his grief out in Russian while Shane just listens. The walls are coming down whether either of them wants them to or not.

After Shane is badly injured in a game, he invites Ilya to spend the summer at his cottage. Inspired by Scott Hunter coming out publicly and kissing Kip after winning the Stanley Cup, Ilya calls Shane to say "I'm coming to the cottage".

What follows is two weeks of (too many) burgers on the grill, sleeping in a real bed together for the first time, saying "I love you" to each other, and Shane's father showing up unannounced to find them kissing. Shane comes out to his parents and tells them about his relationship with Ilya at Shane's parent's house. They also tell the parents their plan: Ilya playing for Ottawa, opens a mental health charity in Ilya's mother's name, and trying to build a life together.

Sixteen months later, Ilya is playing for Ottawa, they're still pretending to hate each other on the ice, and they announce the Irina Foundation at a joint press conference.

Official Book Synopsis

Nothing interferes with Shane Hollander’s game—definitely not the sexy rival he loves to hate.

Pro hockey star Shane Hollander isn’t just crazy talented, he’s got a spotless reputation. Hockey is his life. Now that he’s captain of the Montreal Voyageurs, he won’t let anything jeopardize that, especially the sexy Russian whose hard body keeps him awake at night.

Boston Bears captain Ilya Rozanov is everything Shane’s not. The self-proclaimed king of the ice, he’s as cocky as he is talented. No one can beat him—except Shane. They’ve made a career on their legendary rivalry, but when the skates come off, the heat between them is undeniable. When Ilya realizes he wants more than a few secret hookups, he knows he must walk away. The risk is too great.

As their attraction intensifies, they struggle to keep their relationship out of the public eye. If the truth comes out, it could ruin them both. But when their need for each other rivals their ambition on the ice, secrecy is no longer an option…

SHOW vs BOOK DIFFERENCES

Jacob Tierney's TV adaptation is highly faithful, but there are still some noticeable differences between the show and Rachel's books. Whether you read the books first or binged the show and now you're curious about the source material, here are a few things that are different:

Added in Show

"Like I Love You"

"She would have loved you" exists in both the book and the show. Jacob added "Like I love you" just for the show. Four words that destroyed everyone.

Changed from Book

Size of The Cottage

Shane's cottage is considerably bigger in the book. It has an indoor hockey training facility, a boathouse, a hot tub, a pool, a gym, and comes with kayaks and jet skis. The show scales it back to something a little more down-to-earth.
